Tenure Track Astronomer - NOAO
The National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO) invites applications
for two tenure-track openings for astronomers whose research interests
include use of large scale surveys and their associated datasets. Successful
candidates would join NOAO's new Data
Products Program, an effort to enable science based on archive and
survey datasets from ground-based, optical/IR telescopes. The Data Products
Program is responsible for leading NOAO's participation in the areas of
survey and archive science, with especially strong ties to NOAO's future
roles in the Large-aperture Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project and
the National Virtual Observatory (NVO). Initial elements of the Data Products
Program include the NOAO Science Archive; design and implementation of
data reduction and analysis pipelines, with the goal of building the foundations
for LSST pipeline data analysis; development of a data management concept
for the LSST, from detector to Virtual Observatory query; and participation
in the design and implementation of the NVO. Successful candidates would
be expected to pursue vigorous programs of research using a variety of
ground- and space-based observing facilities, including those of the NOAO
observatories (KPNO, CTIO, and Gemini) and the NOAO Archive and NVO facilities.
Ideally, candidates would use their science to motivate and lead the development
of sources of data products (e.g., survey programs and/or pipelines for
survey instruments such as Mosaic, ISPI/Flamingos, and NEWFIRM) as well
as the development of archive and data-mining tools to take advantage of
NOAO's data products. Experience in extracting science from voluminous,
heterogeneous, and/or multi-wavelength data sets, and contributions to
data processing systems would be considered advantageous. One of the two
positions will be based in Tucson at NOAO headquarters; the other position
will be based at NOAO-South in La Serena, Chile. Both sites field active
scientific staffs engaged in planning the future of NOAO programs, including
participation in the LSST and NVO. The successful candidate for the NOAO-South
position will work primarily in La Serena. The working language is English.
Staff members have excellent benefits and living conditions, an overseas
allowance, an educational stipend for dependent children, international
health care benefits, and annual travel to the point of hire. Bilingual
education for children is available at the International School of La Serena
which was co-founded by and still supported by AURA. The city of La Serena
is a major seaside tourist destination in South America, with a climate
very similar to San Diego, California. Applicants should submit a vita
and a statement of current research and interests. Applicants should also
arrange for three professional references to supply letters of recommendation
to be sent directly to the address above. Applications will be considered
at all levels. Applications received prior to Dec
15, 2002 are assured full consideration. However, applications will
be accepted after December 15, 2002 until the position has been filled.
