No. 12943
Faculty Position in Computational Astrophysics
UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA
Department of Physics and Astronomy
Athens, GA 30602-2451

Attention: Professor Loris Magnani, Chair, Astronomy Search Committee

The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Georgia invites applications for a Faculty Position in Computational Astrophysics to begin in August 2003. This is a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, and responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate teaching duties in addition to the establishment of a strong research program. We currently have active research programs in the fields of star-forming regions and stellar clusters, binary stars, molecular clouds and the interstellar medium, atomic and molecular data of astrophysical interest, and theoretical and and experimental astrochemistry.

The University of Georgia provides an outstanding environment for computation. Central resources available through the University's computer service center include a distributed memory IBM SP parallel supercomputer, an SGI Origin shared memory parallel supercomputer, and workstation and visualization clusters. The astronomy group has multiple high-performance workstations as well as Unix PC clusters.

Preference will be given to individuals working on computer simulations of stellar and/or planetary formation, atmospheres, and/or evolution; the ISM and turbulence; and high-redshift galaxy formation and evolution. However, all outstanding candidates in computational astrophysics will be considered. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong independent research program, obtain research funding, supervise students, and have a commitment to and aptitude for teaching. A Ph.D. in astronomy or a related field is required, and postdoctoral experience and an established record of external funding are preferred.

Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, publication list, research and teaching prospectus, and the names of three references to Chairman, Astronomy Search Committee, at the above address. The deadline for applications is 31 December 2002. We especially encourage applications from minorities and women. AAE/EOE.
