Attention: Astronomy Staff Search Committee
Applications are invited for a position as a Member of the Research
Staff in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution
of Washington. We are seeking theorists or observers in the fields of planet
formation, extrasolar planet detection and characterization, planetary
astronomy, and star formation. The Department of Terrestrial Magnetism
has an active group of researchers in these areas. Alan Boss and George
Wetherill head the theoretical effort to understand the formation of stellar
and planetary systems, while Paul Butler is a leader in the spectroscopic
search for extrasolar planets. Alycia Weinberger observes nearby debris
and protoplanetary disks, while Sara Seager predicts observable signatures
of extrasolar planets and searches for new planets with transit photometry.
Conel Alexander and Larry Nittler perform laboratory studies of pre-planetary
materials. Other DTM scientists include astronomers John Graham and Vera
Rubin, and planetary scientist Sean Solomon. Carnegie is a lead member
institution of the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Carnegie operates the Las
Campanas Observatory in Chile, including the twin 6.5-m Magellan telescopes.
Theoretical calculations are performed on the Carnegie Cluster of workstations.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant field and a significant record
of research and publication. A C.V., bibliography, and brief statement
of interest should be submitted to the above address by 31
December 2002. Women and minority candidates are especially encouraged
to apply. AAE/EOE.
