We seek a candidate who will broaden our areas of research, connect with our current efforts, and interact well with our programs. A Ph.D., postdoctoral experience, and a commitment to teaching are required.
A key strength of the Department is its extraordinarily vital scientific atmosphere. Specific concentrations of research programs include cosmology and astrophysical theory, gravitational microlensing, quasars and active galactic nuclei, and the stellar populations and interstellar medium of the Milky Way and other galaxies.
The Department has a strong program in astronomical instrumentation. It also has a strong graduate program with a very high level of student research activity.
Key facilities include a 1/6 share of the observing time on the Large Binocular Telescope, which will be the world's largest telescope on a single mount when it is completed in 2004/2005, and a 1/4 share of the MDM Observatory.
