Attention: Cherly Beer, Office Manager

The Astronomy Department at New Mexico State University will have a tenure-track faculty position available starting in the fall 2003. The appointment will preferably be at the assistant professor level: appointment at a higher level may be considered in exceptional circumstances, contingent upon availability of funding.

The search will be open to candidates in all areas of research in astronomy or astrophysics. Particular subject areas of interests include planetary science, extra-solar planets, and brown dwarf, but qualified applicants in other areas are equally encouraged to apply. The Astronomy Department at NMSU has a strong research program in the following areas: planetary and brown dwarf atmospheres, X-ray binaries and novae, the interstellar medium, galaxy evolution, stellar populations, galaxy formation and cosmology (see http://astro.nmsu.edu/). NMSU is a member of ARC and has access to the 3.5-m at Apache Point Observatory. We are also participants in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and we operate our own 1-m telescope at APO.

The candidates must have a Ph.D. in a relevant area, demonstrated ability in research, a strong commitment to teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level, and the potential to develop a first-rate funded research program. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Please mail a curriculum vitae, listing teaching experience and interests, and a research plan to the above address. Women, minorities, veterans and disabled persons are encouraged to apply.

Review for applications will begin on 15 December 2002, and will continue until the position is filled. Offer of employment contingent upon verification of an individual's eligibility for employment in the United States. AAE/EOE.
