Attention: Cheryl Matson, Administrative Assistant

Assistant, Associate and Full Researcher Scientist Positions University of California, San Diego Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences

The Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences (CASS, http://casswww.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego would like to appoint one or more researchers at the Assistant, Associate or Full level in any areas of astronomy, astrophysics or space science. Applicants should have an established independent research program and should be prepared to bring in their own funding. Research scientists at all levels are typically Principle Investigators, and they may propose for grants of any size without faculty involvement. Although these positions do not come with any funding from UCSD, they are intended for full time researchers and include regular opportunities for promotion, allowing long-term appointments. The criteria for appointment and promotion are similar to those used at UCSD for faculty positions. While there are no teaching requirements, some researchers do occasionally teach courses and work with graduate students. CASS comprises 23 PhD level research scientists, 4 postdoctoral scientists, 11 faculty and 11 graduate students who are also members of the Physics Department, and 5 other faculty affiliated with the Departments of Chemistry and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Appointees will be entitled to office and laboratory space in our modern building, and they will be entitled to apply to use the facilities of the Lick and W.M. Keck Observatories. CASS members are active in many areas of astronomy, astrophysics and space science, including theory, numerical simulations, observations and the development of instruments for space and ground based telescopes. We are especially interested in X-ray and gamma ray instruments, and the California Extremely Large Telescope (CELT). Applications, consisting of a curriculum vita, list of publications, summary of research that would be pursued at UCSD and funding sources, and the names, addresses and email addresses of at least three people who could write letters of recommendation should be sent to Cheryl Matson at the above address, by 31 January 2003. UCSD is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer with a strong institutional commitment to excellence through diversity.
